The Dental SEO Checklist for Practice Owners

The Dental SEO Checklist for Practice Owners

October 17, 2026
The Dental SEO Checklist for Practice Owners – SEO checklist, local search rankings, and website growth for dental practices.

A dental SEO checklist is the set of checks that make sure patients searching for a dentist can actually find your practice. This one has 38 checks across five areas: your Google Business Profile, your website, your service pages, your reviews, and your tracking.

Most practices do not have an SEO problem. They have a “nobody finished the setup” problem. Work through this list once, fix what is broken, then re-run the short version every quarter.

What a dental SEO checklist should cover

What a dental SEO checklist should cover, including local SEO, website optimization, online reviews, and search performance.

Five areas, in the order they affect new patient calls.

Area Checks Why it sits here
Google Business Profile 12 Most dental searches end in the map pack, not on a website
Website and technical 8 A slow or broken site cancels out everything else
Service pages 9 One page per procedure is what ranks for treatment searches
Reviews and local signals 5 Reviews decide who gets the click once you are visible
Tracking 4 Without this you cannot tell which work paid off

If you only have one afternoon, spend it on the first section. If you are new to this, what dental SEO is explains how these five areas connect.

Google Business Profile checklist (12 checks)

Google Business Profile checklist for dental practices featuring local SEO, business information, reviews, photos, and map visibility.

Your Google Business Profile is the biggest single ranking factor for a local dental practice. Work through these in your profile dashboard.

  1. Primary category is set to the service that earns you the most: Dentist, Cosmetic dentist, Orthodontist or Oral surgeon. Pick one.
  2. Secondary categories added for every other service you want to appear for.
  3. Practice name matches the sign on your door exactly. No “Dr Smith Dental – Best Implants in Town”. Google suspends profiles for this.
  4. Address matches your website footer character for character, including the suite number.
  5. Phone number is a local number, and the same number appears on your site, your directory listings and your ads.
  6. Hours are filled in, including holiday hours.
  7. Services section lists every procedure you offer, each with a short description.
  8. Photos — at least 20 real ones. Your reception, your operatories, your team. Not stock images.
  9. Products section used for your high value treatments, with a price or price range.
  10. Q&A seeded with the five questions your front desk answers every day, answered by you.
  11. Posts published at least twice a month.
  12. Messaging turned on only if someone replies within an hour. A slow reply hurts more than no messaging.

Most practices we audit fail at least four of these twelve. That is why our dental SEO work starts here rather than with the website.

Website and technical checklist (8 checks)

Website and technical SEO checklist for dental practices, covering website speed, mobile responsiveness, security, analytics, and technical optimization.

  1. Your site loads in under 2.5 seconds on a phone using mobile data.
  2. Every page has exactly one H1.
  3. The whole site runs on HTTPS with no mixed content warnings.
  4. Your XML sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console and shows no errors.
  5. No service page is set to noindex. Check this after any site rebuild — it is the most common cause of a sudden ranking drop.
  6. Buttons and phone links are large enough to tap on a phone without zooming.
  7. Your name, address and phone number sit in the footer as real text, not inside an image.
  8. LocalBusiness or Dentist schema is on your homepage, with the same name, address and phone as your Google Business Profile.

If a site fails half of these, a rebuild is usually cheaper than a long list of patches. Our dental website design page covers what a working practice site needs.

Service page checklist (9 checks)

  1. One page per procedure. A single Services page will not rank for implants, Invisalign and root canals at the same time.
  2. The page title contains the procedure and your city.
  3. The first 100 words answer three things: what the treatment is, how long it takes, and roughly what it costs.
  4. A price or price range appears on the page. Pages that hide pricing lose clicks to pages that show it.
  5. Before and after photos, with alt text that describes the treatment.
  6. The dentist who performs the procedure is named, with credentials and a photo.
  7. An FAQ block of four to six questions patients actually ask.
  8. One booking button above the fold, and one at the end of the page.
  9. Links to the two or three related procedures a patient usually asks about next.

High value treatments need deeper pages than a cleaning does. Our guide to implant SEO shows how far that difference goes.

Reviews and local signals (5 checks)

  1. You have more Google reviews than the practice currently ranking above you.
  2. New reviews arrive every month, not in bursts of thirty after a campaign.
  3. Every review gets a reply within a week, including the negative ones.
  4. Your name, address and phone number are identical across the main dental and local directories.
  5. Any old listing from a previous address or phone number has been claimed and corrected, or removed.

Tracking checklist (4 checks)

  1. Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 are both connected and collecting data.
  2. Phone calls from the website are tracked, not just form fills. Most dental enquiries are calls.
  3. Booking form submissions fire a conversion event.
  4. You know your cost per new patient for each channel.

If your monthly report leads with keyword positions instead of booked appointments, it is measuring the wrong thing. Comparing dental SEO agencies covers what a useful report looks like.

How often to run this dental SEO checklist

Run all 38 checks once, at the start. After that, keep it short.

  • Monthly: reviews, Google Business Profile posts, call tracking numbers
  • Quarterly: service pages, site speed, directory listings
  • After any website change: the full technical section, in the same week

Dental SEO results usually appear between month four and month nine. Checking your rankings every week will only make you anxious.

Dental SEO checklist FAQ

How long does this checklist take to work through?

About four hours for the first pass if you do it yourself. Fixing what it finds takes longer — usually two to six weeks of small jobs.

Can a practice do dental SEO without an agency?

Yes, for the Google Business Profile and review sections. Technical fixes and service page content are where most practices run out of time, not ability.

Which single check matters most?

Your Google Business Profile primary category. Setting it wrong caps how often you appear in the map pack, no matter what else you do.

Does this work for a multi location practice?

The same checks apply, but each location needs its own profile, its own page and its own reviews.

How many checks should a dental SEO checklist have?

Enough to cover profile, website, content, reviews and tracking. This one uses 38. A checklist that only covers your website is missing where most dental searches actually end.

Next step

Run the 38 checks against your own practice and write down what fails. If you would rather someone else did it, our free dental SEO audit covers every point on this list and shows you where you sit against the practices outranking you.
